podcast 408 – Listener questions – Part 1

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Paul Wheaton and Jocelyn Campbell are on a road trip to the Seattle area. They discuss and answer listener questions and catch people up on what is happening at Wheaton Labs.

Paul starts off explaining how a "glitch" at Patreon causes a surprise for Paul. Paul is very busy, so in an effort to spread the Permaculture word he compensates some individuals to help him produce, edit and distribute his podcasts and videos. The "glitch" caused Paul to rework his Patreon account and split it into one channel for Podcasts and one channel for Videos, so people who want to support him through Patreon can choose just one or both.

Paul then moves on to talking about creating the "Tango" Trail that accesses a part of the property that was hard to get to before the trail. The Trail was improved by a lot of the work performed by a visiting boot who was at Wheaton Labs on a working vacation. Jocelyn then reads a lovely note from Patreon supporter Chris Sugg, thanking Paul for all the work he has put into the universe and how being introduced to Permaculture has changed his life. Paul spends some time explaining how grateful he is to his supporters and how he hopes that support will continue in the future.

Paul and Jocelyn then spend a bit of time going over upcoming events at Wheaton Labs, including a Roundwood Timber Framing Event happening from September 24th thru October 5th, 2018, the Kickstarter Rocket Oven Pizza Party October 5th thru 7th, 2018 and the exciting news that a spec Wofati (built on contract for sale after completion) is going to be built. The site will be an acre with a full Wofati, hugelkultur beds, a garden and surrounded by junk pole fence that will be available for purchase after building completion. The Wofati project has a builder but they are looking for people to participate as paid builders/designers for the fence and the garden portion of the project.

After the Lab update Paul reveals that Amy Grisak, a freelance writer for New Pioneer magazine, has asked Paul to answer some questions relating to Permaculture for an upcoming article, so Paul answers the following questions (with help and insight from Jocelyn):

What is the big deal with Permaculture?

What has the enormous hugelkultur bed done for you?

What is your opinion of Honey bees vs. Native Bees?

The first part of the podcast ends after a discussion of Honey Bees and "Native" pollinators and the remainder of Amy's questions will be covered in upcoming podcast 409.

9 Radical Ways to Face Climate Change, with Brooklyn’s Rebecca McMackin

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

At Brooklyn Bridge Park, horticulturalist Rebecca McMackin had to think fast to repair the damage after Superstorm Sandy churned ashore in New York City in 2012. Floods, saltwater, and waterfront devastation forced her and her small staff to come up with radical ideas for a healthier, more resilient landscape to stand up to our world’s rapidly changing climate.

For centuries gardeners have created landscapes by adapting their sites to the plants they have chosen to cultivate. Now horticulture innovators are questioning the age-old methods. At Brooklyn Bridge Park, landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh designed the the narrow 85-acre site built on piers on the East River shoreline to be resilient to a changing environment, making it possible for McMackin and her crew to come up with a plan to repair the damage and protect it from future floods.

A garden designer who also heads Mantis Plant Works in Brooklyn, McMackin holds advanced degrees in landscape design and environmental biology and is uniquely qualified as both a scientist and a hands-on gardener to develop strategies to combat climate change. The same ideas can work in your garden and mine.

Here are nine ideas from McMackin, who is now the park’s director of horticulture, on how gardeners can make a difference.

Accept your ecosystem.

“The right plant for the right spot” is one of the traditional maxims of successful gardening, but McMackin would amend that to “the right plant for the right ecosystem.” Think of your garden as an environment where living organisms such as plants, birds, insects, and other animals need to coexist happily with other elements such as the soil (have you tested it?) and the weather (what is the annual range in temperature, and how much wind, rain, and snow do you get?).

With weather unpredictable and climate in flux, it is important to choose plants that want to live where you want to plant them. As conditions evolve, the plants will be better able to adapt.

Investigate your soil.

NARI Home Improvement Show January 17 to 20 at IX Center - cleveland.com

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Whether it’s a new roof or a fresh coat of paint, if you’re a homeowner, chances are you’d love to - or you must - make some improvements come spring.

Need advice? If so, it wouldn’t hurt to stop by the 38th annual National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Home Improvement Show that happens Thursday through Sunday, January 17 to 20, at the IX Center.

Hundreds of Northeast Ohio remodelers will be on hand to offer guidance on any home improvement project, large or small. Individual booths will accommodate one-on-one chats with professionals, and seminars will range from “Turn Your Backyard Into a Personal Retreat” to “Designing for Wellness,” to “SmartHome Technology with Alexa/Google.”

“The NARI Show has always been about being on the cutting edge of what homeowners want,” said Kathy Masterson, Executive Director of NARI Greater Cleveland. “This year it’s all about technology and our features will reflect that.”

There’s even a raffle for new roof.

Mike Holmes, a Canadian builder/contractor and TV host, is dropping by. Starting with “Holmes on Homes,” he rescues homeowners in Toronto from renovations gone wrong. He continued that role with “Holmes Inspection” and eventually became a judge on the HGTV show “Handyman Superstar Challenge” and its American counterpart, “All American Handyman.” Holmes will appear on the Main Stage at noon and 5 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re very excited to have him at the show,” Masterson said. “He has a make it right attitude that really connects with people.”

Ohio State Waterproofing is bringing back Gary Sullivan to broadcast his nationally syndicated radio show “At Home with Gary Sullivan” 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

This year’s attractions include a super-smart kitchen created by Ken and Sue Perrin of Artistic Renovations in Seven Hills.

“The appliances are WiFi enabled so you can talk to them when you’re not at home,” Ken Perrin said in a release. “With a phone app, you can download recipes, pre-heat your oven and hit the roast button remotely. ”

Another is the Great Indoor/Outdoor Living Oasis by Land Creations Landscaping in Columbia Station and Remodel Me Today in Olmsted Falls. The Old World Artisan kitchen will be designed with custom cabinetry, vinyl plank flooring, a stone fireplace and an office area. The outdoor area includes a patio with an outdoor kitchen and an entertainment area with furniture and a bar.

Part of what NARI does is to encourage young people to consider going into building trades. As they’ve done in years past, future remodelers – possibly - from Polaris and Medina County Career Centers designed and built birdhouses that will be raffled to benefit the Cleveland Animal Protective League. Tickets will be available at the APL Adopt-A-Pet exhibit.

The drawing for “The Great Big Roofing Giveaway” by Absolute Roofing & Construction in Cleveland is 2 p.m. Sunday. The roof is value at $15,000 and the winner up to a 40-square shingle roof on a residential home in Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Portage, Lorain, Summit or Medina counties; the removal of an existing shingle roof and haul away, ice guard per applicable building code, synthetic underlayment, drip edge, flashing, Owens-Corning DURATION shingles and clean up.

Torna la Global Sources Electronics Fair 2018: numeri e attese

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Global Sources Electronics Fair 2018

Global Sources Electronics Fair 2018

Global Sources Electronics Fair 2018Global Sources Electronics Fair 2018

Insomma ci sarà da divertirsi, soprattutto se siete interessati all'elettronica "made in China".
